Setting up and testing NDI over WiFi

Did you know that both the Magewell Director Mini and the OBSBot Tail Air cameras support NDI? Not only that, with the Director Mini's network access point you can stream directly from the cameras right into the Director Mini without having to have a router!

Today we tested that out and wanted to see how much range we could get while still smoothly having video over NDI. We had all three cameras join the Director Mini's 5G WiFi Access Point and set the camera's NDI quality mode to "Medium".

Taking the cameras outside to have a uninterrupted line of sight, we measured 70 feet between the cameras and the Director Mini before there was any lag or stuttering of video. That's quite impressive considering the Director Mini doesn't have any external antennas.

Looking to do the same? Here's a quick setup guide.

1. Turn on the Director Mini hotspot by swiping down on the screen and hitting the "Hotspot" icon in the network section

2. Connect the OBSBot cameras to the hotspot network by going into the OBSBot Start app, Live Streaming via WiFi and joining the hotspot network

3. All devices should be on the hotspot WiFi connection now. Add a source on the bottom of the Director Mini's screen, choose NDI and find the relevant camera(s).

This is a quick way to set up a three camera production while keeping cable clutter at a minimum. Let us know if you've tried it or similar!
